Next month, I am offering a Gratitude Yoga Series as well as starting the Master Class: Relax 6-week series.

The next few months are dedicated to giving thanks and celebrating family and friendships, but sometimes, the pressure to "do the holidays right" can lead to stress and feelings of being overwhelmed. Surely not ideal. You are hoping to share love and peace and instead run yourself ragged.

Flow yoga and restorative yoga practices are great ways to manage stress and relax during the holiday season. The key idea here is PRACTICE. The reason why the phrase "Just Relax" is so unnerving is because it is sometimes simply impossible. When you are used to being frantic during the holidays, your body and mind can be in a state of "fight or flight." No, a crazed reindeer is NOT out to get you, but your nervous system may feel that way, even while you believe you are simply on the hunt for gifts for under the tree.

I personally have allowed myself to become overwhelmed with just the thought of celebrating some years. My mind has gone through epically long and soap-opera-detailed stories as to what would happen if I did not get the correct gifts for everybody. And so, I've retreated completely. No gifts, no contact, just avoiding it all together. And obviously, that doesn't feel good either. So, I give myself grace and practice being in the moment instead of creating a story. And this takes practice. So I continue to learn.

Here are a few tips for incorporating yoga for gratitude and relaxation during the holiday season:

  • Set aside time for your practice. Even if it's just for 15 minutes a day, make sure to schedule time for meditation, yoga, or quiet reflection into your busy schedule.
  • Find a quiet space where you won't be disturbed. This could be your bedroom, living room, or even a park bench on a sunny day.
  • Give yourself a few minutes of deep breathing. Guide your breath all the way down to your belly. This will help to calm your mind and body and prepare you for your practice or the rest of your day.
  • Add a pose that focuses on opening your heart and chest. Sphinx pose, for example. Or guide your shoulders up and then back as the crown of your head lifts. These poses can help to promote feelings of love, gratitude, and compassion.
  • Modify yoga poses and take breaks as needed. During yoga and the rest of your day, the most important thing is to listen to your body and discover your own pace.

I hope you find a way to practice gratitude with your loved ones in a way that fills you up instead of depletes you.

Have a peaceful & powerful day!
