August Challenge: Day One
Tina Haapala | AUG 1, 2023
My Facebook business page has shifted and changed focus along with me throughout the years. Back in 2012, I was working in a "temporary-part time" marketing position (that lasted until 2021). At the same time, I was trying to find my footing in the writing world. I had a few personal essays in Chicken Soup for the Soul, I was writing a blog, and I had started to work on a memoir.
Somewhere along the way, I stopped working on the memoir. I knew where it was going-- I had it planned out, but I started to stack everything else on top of it and it sunk deeper and deeper into the virtual desk drawer.
So much of yoga is finding pathways to understanding yourself, and the fact that this unfinished memoir is creating a cavern for me to leap across to feel complete has appeared front and center recently.
First, two people who were a big part of my past... passed.
I turned 50.
And then, a family member faced a life-threatening crisis.
Sneaky reminders of the dusty manuscript started to appear out of nowhere. Like this memory that someone shared the other day on Facebook. Back when Frank originally shared this post, the page was still called Excuse Editor, but because I only changed the name, I received a notification that this writer was once inspired by something I shared, and shared the memory again 11 years later.
So many of us mindlessly scroll Facebook when we are "bored." It can be a bad habit. I was doing just that when I happened upon a FB conversation about a writer's group meeting. I inserted myself into the comment chain, and later arrived at the writer's group. I had grabbed my binder with my memoir off the shelf (the real shelf, I would discover later I hadn't yet printed everything I had written), and set out to see how the words had aged.
Thankfully, everything is editable.
Except this post.
I'm challenging myself to write each day in August. I am only giving myself a limited time to write and edit--and when that buzzer goes off-- that's (pretty much) it. What you see is what you get.
I'm also planning on adding some writing and journaling opportunities to supplement my yoga and meditation offerings. I'll share more of this as we move along.
Until next time, have a peaceful & powerful day!
You can find some of my published writings in the following Chicken Soup for the Soul titles:
